Open Enrollment for 2025 Health Insurance Coverage Starts November 1

During this year’s annual open enrollment period, November 1, 2024, through January 15, 2025, individuals can enroll or re-enroll in a Marketplace health insurance plan. South Dakotans can receive free assistance exploring their health coverage options from health insurance navigators. Navigators can help individuals and families review the plans available, assist with eligibility and enrollment forms and provide post-enrollment services such as using their coverage to get care.

The Marketplace offers affordable health insurance coverage for individuals and families who don’t have access to health insurance through their employer and those who are not eligible for Medicaid or Medicare. In fact, four out of five people can find plans for $10 or less per month on the Marketplace. “Most people now qualify for discounts that help substantially lower their monthly health insurance costs,” said Penny Kelley, outreach and enrollment services program manager at the Community HealthCare Association of the Dakotas. “The Marketplace also offers coverage for families who have employer insurance that is unaffordable. Tax credits may be available to help the entire family enroll in a Marketplace plan.”

People enrolling in a plan on HealthCare.gov are guaranteed comprehensive coverage with no pre-existing condition exclusions or markups. These plans cover essential benefits, including doctor and hospital visits, prescription drugs, mental health treatment, and maternity care. In addition, enrollees receive free preventive care services, such as vaccines and health screenings.

Enrolling in health insurance can be confusing, but free local help is available. “If you have questions about insurance, we’re there to help you,” says Judy McCarthy, a Western SD Community Action navigator. Health insurance navigators are stationed at several organizations, including Horizon Health, Complete Health, Falls Community Health, South Dakota Urban Indian Health, and the Helpline Center.
